Since our resort was an all-inclusive resort, we had a couple of options of activities to choose from for our stay which included snorkeling at a reef, cave tubing, zip lining, hiking up the Mayan ruins, fishing, scuba diving, and more. We did everything except for fishing and scuba diving. The amount of off-island activities you can do depends on how long your stay is. Our stay was for 8 nights/9 days so we were able to choose 5 activities.
Cave tubing and ziplining was really fun! It was the second day of our trip and I have never done either so I was very excited. The rides are pretty long to reach the areas inland of Belize, but definitely worth it. We went ziplining first and got to see some monkeys during the zipline. There were about 6 ropes we went down and you have to hike a little bit to get to each rope so by the time we were done, we were sweating a ton. After we were done with ziplining, we were given some time to change into swimsuits and water shoes for the cave tubing. We were also given the tubes and life jackets from the tour guide. The walk to the caves was through some rivers and through the rainforest which it rained on us during this time, but it was amazingly beautiful. I would recommend having water shoes for this activity. During the cave tubing, all the tubes were tied together and the guide would be talking to us about the caves and the history of Belize as well as push our tubes in the direction needed. It was quite relaxing and interesting to learn about the cave and Belize!
Probably, the next best thing was exploring the Mayan Ruins. I think we were lucky that there was only one other couple (coincidentally, the wife was also a third year medical student and the husband an engineer who were also on their honeymoon) with us to go on this tour. Again, the bus ride to the ruins was 2 hours long but we got to stop by a gift store on the way and also slept on the bus a little bit too.
The ruins themselves were amazingly huge. It was really impressive thinking about how the people built these structures and the thought that went into these structures. There were also some howler monkeys in the trees which we were able to see as well.
My favorite activity of the trip was probably the snorkeling. We were able to go twice via boat into the ocean despite the bad weather we had the first couple of days. The water was super blue and beautiful. I had a little bit of sea sickness (as well as some other guests on the boat), but overall, Min and I really enjoyed our time looking at the fish and swimming.
